Het fenomeen FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) beschrijft de obsessieve bezorgdheid om een sociale interactie, ervaring of andere gebeurtenis mis te lopen en het niet bij te kunnen houden. Dit gevoel wordt vooral geassocieerd met of versterkt door moderne technologieën zoals smartphones en social media.
De gebruikte technieken (o.a. borduren) in deze werken staan juist haaks op dit begrip. Niet snel en meer, maar terugschakelen en repteren. Veel tijd en aandacht aan dit werk kwijt zijn, terwijl je zoveel andere ideeën in je hoofd hebt en daar ook mee verder wilt. Dit was ook de strijd en tegelijk uitdaging van Maartje Folkeringa bij het maken van dit werk.

The phenomenon of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) describes the obsessive concern with missing a social interaction, experience, or other event, and the feeling of not being able to keep up. This feeling is especially associated with, or amplified by, modern technologies such as smartphones and social media.
The techniques used in these works (including embroidery) stand in direct contrast to this concept. Not fast and more, but slowing down and repeating. Spending a great deal of time and attention on this work, while having so many other ideas in your head that you also want to pursue. This was both the struggle and at the same time the challenge for Maartje Folkeringa in creating this work.
